Group Riding
Wednesday evening runs will normally set off from Kingswells P&R in smallish Groups of no more than 8 riders.
In order to keep everyone running at the same pace, we use the "Mirror System" where the each member of a Group will keep the
rider behind in their mirrors and that no-one in the Group overtakes another rider within that Group.
Riders should ride at their own pace, and not try and keep up with the rider in front.
It is important to understand that this system means that the Group
rides at the pace of the slowest rider and that there is NO OVERTAKING within the Group.
The Leader will ride at such a pace that the following rider is not forced to
play "catch-up" and is always kept in sight.
There is only One Leader and there are NO Back Markers in the "Mirror System" so it is
important to recognize what is happening behind you.
In the "Mirror System" all riders should ensure they are able to see the following rider in their
mirrors at all times, Headlights On will help.
The Leader and each rider within the Group should be sure that the following rider is close
enough to see which turning they are taking and ensure they are still behind them after the
junction/exit before continuing any further.
We normally send out more than one Group with an interval between
each. Leaders will endeavor to maintain a clear distance between the Groups by adjusting
their speed or, if necessary, stopping their Group at a suitably safe position to re-establish a
sufficient gap. This will be done to avoid bunching of larger Groups which other road users
may find difficult to deal with and may otherwise attract unnecessary problems for the
police.
